Have you ever?
Have you ever felt that the number of tasks you need to accomplish are getting higher while the amount of time you have is getting lower and lower? This could be a result of poor time management. Poor time management doesn’t mean that you’re procrastinating, it could simply be an issue regarding time spent on each task. Many students devote their time to schoolwork, as well as developing their social lives and even having a part time job. Nobody is incapable of the balance, but sometimes they lack the proper tools to achieve it.
Why is time management important?
Sometimes life can speed past us and little things get put off to the last minute or go uncompleted. This can be very stressful and dampen our work-life balance. Having good time management skills can help with these negatives by allocating more time for self care and evenly dispersing the workload over several days. With this, you will not be anticipating a stressful cram session the night before an exam. Time management is an extremely important skill to master to be able to handle higher volumes of work in an easier manner. The benefits of time management may be an increase in productivity, less stress, better decision making, higher rates of goal achievement, and an overall improved quality of life.
Ways to manage time
Make a visual! Create a planner or calendar and try to create timeframes where your tasks should be getting done. Not all timeframes will be accurate, but it will give you a better view of how you’re spending your time and should give you insight on how to approach future tasks.
Have a Plan! Start your day by forming a way to attack your tasks for the day. This can be a to-do list or even a mental plan.
Prioritize! It’s no secret that when it gets down to the wire, we tend to make rash decisions on what is most important. If you pick out the day’s most important tasks ahead of time then you will be more likely to be productive.
Divide and conquer! If you have larger tasks to accomplish, don’t overwhelm yourself by getting it all done in one sitting, sometimes you need mental breaks to do your best work.
Limit distractions! It can be difficult to completely control your environment, however, taking steps to decrease distractions can be significant. Reduce mind wandering by removing your phone from the equation or wearing headphones to limit noise.
