The College Question

Deciding whether or not to go to college is a significant time in your life, and the emotions tied to this choice can be both exciting and overwhelming. Some have had their hearts set on a particular college for years, while others may find themselves at a crossroads, unsure of the path to take. In this blog, we'll delve into the reasons why this decision holds such importance and how our emotions, fears, and goals can shape it. Recognizing the vital role of mental health in this process is crucial – it's not just about where you want to go academically, but also about how you feel personally. You begin to learn more about yourself and how you see yourself in the near future. It is a complex decision-making journey, but it’s important to acknowledge that feelings of uncertainty are normal and emphasize the importance of prioritizing your mental well-being throughout this transformative and universal experience.

The Science Behind Decision-Making and Mental Health

Deciding on a college is a significant choice that triggers reactions in your brain. Think of the amygdala as a conductor in your brain. When it's decision time, it releases chemicals like dopamine for excitement and cortisol for stress, causing a mix of emotions. You might feel enthusiasm or uncertainty – that's just your brain responding to the college decision, a feeling everyone experiences. (https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/body/24894-amygdala)

Now shifting our focus to societal expectations and your dreams. Society says certain things about successful college journeys, and your own dreams add another layer. It makes choosing a college not just about classes but also about personal stuff.

And here's where mental health steps into the spotlight. The emotional toll it takes in your brain during the big college decision can affect how you feel. Stress and uncertainty might make you a bit anxious. It's important to connect the dots – deciding on college isn't just about paperwork; it's also about taking care of your feelings. By understanding this brain dance and its link to your well-being, you can approach the decision with mindfulness and kindness to yourself, knowing that looking after your mental health is a crucial part of the journey.

Decisions on College

According to a Federal Reserve Study, as of 2021, nearly 40% of adults who went to college had regrets regarding the major they chose. This starts with the humanities/arts (48%) to social/behavioral sciences (46%), and even education (40%).

Additionally, 14% also said that they would not have attended college at all looking back at their current past experiences. Furthermore, 52% wished that they had chosen to attend a different school.
